*Do you know what MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) is?

Suggested page: MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit): What It Means and How It Works

MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) defines the maximum packet size that can pass through a network connection without fragmentation. In simple terms, it determines how much data can be placed inside one network packet before that packet becomes too large for the network path.

Every packet contains both useful data and technical headers. A larger MTU allows more data to be carried with fewer packets, which can improve efficiency. However, problems appear when one part of the route supports a smaller packet size. The packet may then be fragmented into several pieces or rejected.

Fragmentation can create additional processing and increase the chance of packet loss. This is especially important for DNS. Most DNS queries and responses are small, but DNSSEC, IPv6 records, or domains with many records can produce larger responses. If a UDP response becomes too large, DNS may need to retry the request over TCP.

VPNs and network tunnels can also reduce the effective MTU because they add extra headers. Choosing an appropriate MTU helps prevent fragmentation, connection problems, and unreliable DNS responses.
